If you’re a fan of IHOP’s stuffed French toast, then you’ll LOVE this easy and delicious homemade stuffed French toast recipe, made from stuff you already have!

Stuffed French Toast

Have you ever had cream cheese stuffed French toast? If you haven’t, you’re missing out!

What Is Stuffed French Toast?

Ummm a gift from Heaven! Stuffed French toast is sort of like a combination between French toast and grilled cheese!

You assemble the “stuffed” section of it similarly to grilled cheese, and then soak it in an egg wash, and fry it to make it like French toast!

Stuffed French Toast

I love recipes that consist of basic ingredients, like this stuffed French toast recipe!

Stuffed French Toast Ingredients

Most of these ingredients are pantry staples, and you can also substitute some of these ingredients to make use of things you already have (like swapping the strawberry jam for another flavor, or even replacing it with Nutella, YUM!).

Here is your shopping list:

Stuffed French Toast Filling:

  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
  • ? cup seedless strawberry jam
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup strawberries, chopped finely

Egg Mixture:

  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or half-and-half
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Bread:

  • 8-10 slices thick bread, like Texas toast

Toppings:

  • Strawberry Sauce – 1 cup chopped strawberries, ¼ cup granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons water. Heat all ingredients in a small saucepan and cook until desired consistency.
  • Fresh strawberries
  • Syrup
  • Powdered sugar

The first step in making stuffed French toast, is mixing up your filling!

How to Make Stuffed French Toast at Home

If using strawberry sauce, prepare first.

In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese until fluffy.

Stuffed French Toast

If you don’t like strawberry stuffed French toast, you can use another flavor, instead!

Add jam and vanilla extract and beat until smooth.

Stuffed French Toast

I recommend using fresh strawberries, because the frozen ones get mushy.

Fold in strawberries.

Stuffed French Toast

Did you know that if you can’t eat eggs, you can make this French toast soak/ “egg wash” without them? Just omit the eggs, and leave the milk of your choice and the spices.

In a large bowl, whisk together all ingredients for egg mixture.

Stuffed French Toast

Kids love helping with this step–“stuff” your French toast by making a sandwich.

Spread cream cheese mixture onto 2 slices of bread and make a sandwich with them.

Stuffed French Toast

Repeat this step until you have a stack of little sandwiches, ready to be made into stuffed French toast goodness!

Heat griddle to 350 degrees F and spray with cooking spray.

Stuffed French Toast

Not gonna lie, I wear disposable gloves for this part or use tongs!

Dip bread into egg mixture, coating both sides.

Stuffed French Toast

Mmm nothing beats the cinnamon smell of fresh stuffed French toast simmering away!

Add to griddle and cook until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.

Stuffed French Toast

See?! This is one of the easiest French toast recipes!

Flip and continue cooking until golden brown.

Serve immediately with fresh strawberries, syrup, or powdered sugar.

Stuffed French Toast

Top your stuffed French toast with fresh fruit, whipped cream, powdered sugar, chocolate shavings, or anything else you can dream up!

Gluten Free Stuffed French Toast Recipe

It is super easy to make gluten free stuffed French toast! Just swap the regular bread out for gluten free bread.

If you want to use thicker bread, you might be better off making your own loaf of gluten free bread, and then you can slice it as thick as you prefer!

Check the ingredient labels on all of the packaged ingredients to make sure they are also gluten free, too.

Stuffed French Toast

If you omit the egg and replace the dairy ingredients, it’s easy to make vegan stuffed french toast!

Vegan French Toast

In order to make vegan stuffed French toast, you will need to use vegan bread (or make your own).

You will also need to buy vegan cream cheese, and a plant-based milk of your choice.

You will also have to omit eggs from the egg soak, and use a “milk soak”, consisting of your vegan milk of choice, and the seasonings listed above in the recipe, instead.
