How to Make Peppermint Bark

By: Kristen Yard

It isn’t the holiday season without peppermint bark! I usually buy it, but this year, my daughter and I are making some of our own.

Peppermint Bark

Peppermint bark is the perfect solution for when you need a last minute Christmas dessert that doesn’t take long to make!

What Do I Need to Make Peppermint Bark?

I was really intimidated by the thought of making my own Christmas candy this year–visions of double boilers, and sugar burns danced through my head.

Really, if you’re wanting to dabble in candy making this holiday season, this peppermint bark recipe is the gateway recipe for you!

You don’t need any fancy candy-making equipment, and the ingredients are all basic and easy to find (yay, Amazon!).

Kids have so much fun crushing the candy canes in a Ziploc bag with a rolling pin! Just make sure a grown up supervises.

Ingredients and Supplies:

  • A package (16 ounce) white chocolate almond bark
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract, divided
  • A package (16 ounce) chocolate almond bark
  • 1/2 cup candy canes, crushed
  • Parchment paper
  • Ziploc bags
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheets

Parchment paper is super important for this recipe, and for holiday baking in general! Stock up on it when you buy your holiday baking supplies.

1. Once you have gathered all of your ingredients, line baking sheet with parchment paper, leave 2-3 inches extra to easily remove.

2. Next, place candy canes in a resealable bag and crush with rolling pin.

Be sure to check in on the chocolate almond bark as it is melting.

3. Then, add chocolate almond bark to medium size microwave safe bowl.

Microwave in small increments and stir.

4. Next, heat for 1 minute, and stir.

5. Continue heating for 10-20 seconds at a time, stirring after each heating.

6. Stop heating just before all chocolate is melted.

7. Stir until completely melted.

8. Add ½ teaspoon peppermint extract and stir until well combined.

Use a silicone spatula to smooth chocolate onto your lined baking sheet.

9. Spread evenly onto prepared baking sheet.

The layering step is the best part!

10. Repeat steps for melting chocolate with white almond bark.

11. Add ½ teaspoon peppermint extract and stir until well combined.

12. Spread evenly on top of chocolate layer.

Don’t wait too long to add the crushed candy cane pieces, because the chocolate hardens pretty quickly.

13. Immediately add crushed candy canes.

14. Break into pieces.

15. Store in airtight container.
