Primer Wants to Help Parents with the Homeschool Experience. Here’s How

A homeschooling startup, Primer, is rethinking the way we teach our kids at home. They started with a question: how can we make it easier for parents to homeschool their kids?

Their full program and curriculum launch in August 2020, but in the meantime, they’re offering some pretty amazing resources and tools that I think many parents will appreciate.

A New Homeschool Learning Experience With Primer

Founder Ryan Delk was homeschooled through eighth grade. He knows firsthand how hard it was for his mom to piece together a curriculum, and she had once been a public school teacher. That’s one reason why he, along with his partner Maksim, created Primer. 

They launched the company with resources to help parents understand homeschooling and what options they have. These tools, which are currently free, include:

• Navigator: This tool helps parents look up their state regulations for homeschooling.
• Primer Library: this resource is an amazing collection packed with free digital resources.

But that’s just the beginning. The start-up recently raised $3.7 million in seed money from Founders Fund among other investors. This money is helping them ramp up their offerings so that they have a full suite of interactive products for parents interested in starting homeschool. 

The next launch is going to be big one. In August, they’ll offer a subscription-based service that includes online interest-based communities. The communities will focus on everything from baking to building rockets. In addition to the communities, kids will have access to and learn from experts.

Kids will learn from experts through Primer’s platform.

As if all that wasn’t reason enough to join Primer, I love what Delk has to say about their mission. He told TechCrunch, “It’s going to be very hands-on and we’re going to be upfront about that. We are not building a plant-your-kid-in-front-of-an-iPad-for-six-hours product.”

That thought alone feels a bit revolutionary when compared to the last few months of public school eLearning. It takes into account the fact that kids like hands-on activities, and it leaves plenty of time for play.

It’s the best of both worlds for kids age five to 18: an online community and plenty of hands-on activities. 

So what’s the monthly subscription for Primer going to be? They haven’t announced the cost yet, but join their waitlist on their site, and you’ll be the first to know.
