A historic space mission is set to launch on May 27, 2020, and the whole family is going to want to see this!

This is the first time in nearly a decade that American astronauts will launch into space from American soil. But that’s not the only historic part of this mission; this will also be the first time ever American astronauts take a commercial aircraft into space.
The Crew Dragon was designed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, and it’ll take two veteran NASA astronauts to the International Space Station.
How to Watch the Historic SpaceX Launch
The SpaceX launch takes place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. While launches used to be public events, due to the coronavirus, viewing there is limited to only family and a handful of guests.
Thankfully, though, people can tune in from their comfort of their homes. I know my kids are going to be so excited to watch this!
On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, tune in to your local CBS station at 4:33 p.m. Eastern to watch this historic SpaceX launch.
It’ll also be streamed online here and CBSN with pre-launch coverage starting at noon eastern.
As if all of this wasn’t cool enough, the SpaceX mission will be covered live for a whole 24 hours! They’re planning to continue coverage until the NASA astronauts dock at the ISS on May 28.
Some cool facts your kids will love about this SpaceX launch:
- A Falcon 9 rocket will carry the Crew Dragon into space and out of the lower atmosphere.
- Approximately 12 minutes after liftoff, the SpaceX will continue on into space on its own.
- This mission has been six years in the making, and there are plans for the Commercial Crew Program to continue with more launches by SpaceX as well as Boeing.
This is history in the making, and hopefully the weather cooperates! We can’t wait to watch!
