As you are out shopping, walking the neighborhood or even trick-or-treating this year you might notice some bright, teal pumpkins. There is a specific meaning behind them and it is worth knowing about. Here’s Why Parents Are Putting Teal Pumpkins On Their Doorsteps This Year.

Here’s Why Parents Are Putting Teal Pumpkins On Their Doorsteps This Year

While teal is one of my favorite colors, it is much more than just a pretty cool at least when it comes to decorating for fall. Now that I mention it, you’ll begin noticing teal pumpkins everywhere including teal, trick-or-treat buckets like this one:

So, what does this mean? Well, the Teal Pumpkin Project was started as a way to raise awareness for kids with food allergies.

Every year we pass out candy to kids in costume but what you may not know, is that the candy you give could be deadly to a child with food allergies. My son has a peanut allergy so we have to be very careful with the types of candy he receives and consumes on Halloween. We spend quite a while going through each and every candy removing any we are afraid may contain peanuts (which leaves very little options).

In fact, about 1 in 13 children suffer from a food allergy in the U.S. with approximately 30% of those kids being allergic to more than one food. Many of the Halloween candy offered includes 6 of the main food allergens including: soy, milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and wheat.

Teal Pumpkins symbolize homes that offer allergy-friendly treats or other toys and trinkets to serve in replacement of candy that may cause allergic reactions. In fact, here are 100+ Ideas to Pass out on Halloween that aren’t candy.

The idea is, you put a pre-made or painted teal pumpkin on your doorstep to let other parents and kids know your house offers allergy-friendly options. It can also mean that a child that lives there has allergies, nonetheless, it’s an allergy friendly symbol. But if you don’t want to have a pumpkin, you can also print a free sign from The Teal Pumpkin Project and display it on your doorstep.

Now, if you have a child with a food allergy, you can seek out these homes with teal pumpkins. You can also purchase a teal trick-or-treat bucket so other people are aware that your child has food allergies and offers them an alternative to traditional Halloween candy.
