What is Your Favorite Activity to Do With Your Kids?
Every year, I am probably just as excited as my daughter is for summer break to arrive! The relaxed schedule, the lack of mandatory homework (we still review all summer!), the warmer weather, and outdoor activities… sign me up! My favorite summer activities with my daughter mainly revolve around getting outside and getting active! After being cooped up all winter, it’s nice to see the community buzzing with activity.
The Farmers Market is A Favorite Activity in Our House!
Every Saturday morning we wake up, get dressed, and walk up to the Farmer’s Market. Over the years, the different vendors and farmers have become friends who have watched my daughter grow. My daughter has learned about where her food comes from, and loves helping to select everything!
From artisan coffee, to live music, friends and neighbors, and a taco truck, our entire Saturday entertainment is covered all in one spot that we can easily walk to from our house.
Spending More Time Walking and Riding Bikes
Thanks to warmer weather and a more relaxed schedule, we walk as much as possible! We live close by parks, grocery stores, and restaurants, so there are plenty of excuses to get out there and move.
If we want ice cream, we walk for it! We have the coolest ice cream and candy shop built in a very old, repurposed mill that just so happens to involve walking through the most majestic little park with waterfalls. That is one of our favorite mommy/daughter dates!
I love summer, and walking, because they both remind me to slow down and take advantage of spending more time with my daughter talking and noticing things that we might not have noticed in a car.
We also have a couple of other families of moms and kids that my daughter and I are friends with in the neighborhood, so we all go as a big group for walks/ bike rides a few nights a week so that everyone has some exercise and fun!
Returning to Nature
By far, our absolute favorite thing to do is exploring the great outdoors–whether it’s checking out small festivals, or the live music on the main street by our house once a week, playing at the park, going to the beach, or camping, there’s just something about nature that presses the re-set button and de-stresses us both.
The best part of this is that it’s so cheap, and most of the time, free! We try to camp with friends once or twice in the summer and it makes it more affordable because the families all share the cost of the space or cabin.
Be a Tourist in Your Own Town!
As much as I love a good vacation, staycations are the best, because we aren’t as tired, after! My daughter and I love searching out the tourist attractions in our hometown, and areas close by. Even if it’s just a one-night getaway we have a blast learning about the history.
