Dirty thirties. 30 and thriving. No matter what you call it, Brain Experts Say You’re Not An Adult Until You’re In Your 30s so if you’re younger than that, hang in there kid the best is yet to come!

Brain Experts Say You’re Not An Adult Until You’re In Your 30s

It sounds crazy because as far as the government is concerned, you’re considered an adult at 18-years-old. Not mention by age 21 you’re allowed to legally drink, smoke and do other “adult” things.

But if you’ve ever been called “childish” or “immature” even after becoming an official ‘adult’ you might finally have a reason for it because brain experts say you’re not an adult until you are in your 30s…

Professor Peter Jones, from Cambridge University told BBC news:

“What we’re really saying is that to have a definition of when you move from childhood to adulthood looks increasingly absurd. It’s a much more nuanced transition that takes place over three decades.”

He then continued on by saying:

“I guess systems like the education system, the health system and the legal system make it convenient for themselves by having definitions.”

So, while you’re able to get married, vote, get a mortgage, and even get into legal trouble, technically you shouldn’t be as far as science is concerned.

I mean, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this. Time and time again we are reminded (thanks to underage drinking campaigns) that your brain isn’t fully developed until around age 25 (source). It’d then make sense that the maturest of adults are closer to their 30s.

This is certainly an interesting thought and something to keep in mind if you are around people under the age of 30.

And if you’re one of those people, at least you’ll have an awesome comeback the next time someone says your immature or act like a big kid.
