Grown and Flown: Traveling with Style

By: Pam Harris

August is always a big travel month for Grown & Flown families. Some of us may be dealing with complicated emotions and a lot of organizing around moving kids into college. Others may be trying to cram in a long list of college visits before senior year kicks off. These can often be fun and happy times for sure, but with a lot of angst and stress thrown in for good measure.

Travel style

Whatever challenges you’re facing this month, you know you need to plan and pack smart. Most of your time may be be spent dealing with everyone else’s issues, so for yourself you need to keep things easy breezy. To paraphrase one of my favorite quotes (minimalist that I am) – Keep things as simple as possible, but not simpler. (Yes, I’m quoting Einstein!)

Note: G&F may receive compensation from purchases made through the links in this post but the opinions are our own.

A small carry on suitcase is key. These bags fit more than you’ll need for a few days away. This rose-gold hard shell spinner will definitely stand out, as will this sophisticated version in a marble finish. I’ve found that the hard shell cases hold a ton of stuff and something about them makes me feel so super organized and together when I travel.

This Herschel Supply carry-on will be great for your college student (and hopefully their trips back home!). If you prefer something with pockets and straps, here’s a Lands’ End waxed canvas duffle that is sturdy and practical.

A tote bag is always helpful – whether you’re on a plane or throwing it into the front of the car with you on a long trip. The Longchamp nylon tote is a classic and Pam and I both agree on the MZ Wallace large metro tote – useful and chic. I love Baggu, and this striped crossbody will be super useful.

Since you may be running around a campus, or up and down flights of stairs carrying packages from Target and Bed, Bath & Beyond – you’ll need comfortable sneakers. I like these Nike Free TR8s in guava, but there’s a ton of colors to choose from. And these retro  Adidas Superstars come in some great new patterns vs. the classic white ones pictured here.

You’ll probably need to layer up wherever you’re going and I think a great hoodie is priceless.  I like this burn-out terry from Alternative. This long and hooded cardigan looks cozy and cute.

I love this dry wrap training hoodie from Nike. You can belt it or leave it open for a more swingy silhouette.

No matter what you’re doing – I feel like a shower, a nice glass of wine and a pretty dress will make any “Kool Mom” feel that much better.  This floral midi from Target is no fuss/no muss and I like this Kate Spade daisy sundress.

Free People have another winner with this mixed print twist dress.

Whether I’m on the road or at home, I’m a little obsessed with pouches and organizing things into pouches. This cute Lands’ End pouch can be monogrammed.

I know this news might be a little disturbing to some (and welcome to others), but fanny packs are a thing again. When you’re on the move and carrying lots of things, a fanny pack could be a savior.  This Everlane version is a sleek and modern update.  (I’ve also seen a lot of girls in NYC wearing them crossbody – there’s a lust-worthy Gucci version I’ve seen thrown over the shoulder a lot.)

These items are great staples regardless of your August plans and hopefully will make any transition you are going through just a tad less stressful and complicated.

XoXo

Four Perfect Laid-Back L.A. Looks

We are Pam and Mara, Grown and Flown’s new in-house style gurus. Based in Brooklyn, we’ve been friends for over 20 years, with four boys, many proms, graduations, beach vacations and birthday dinners between us.
Mara’s been living in jeans and t-shirts working in the fashion world in London, Milan, LA, and NYC, producing editorial and ad shoots for over two decades. Pam’s been suiting up for the corporate world as a chief marketing officer in the live entertainment/sports business.

We’ve always been a little obsessed with style and how we use clothes to help us feel attractive and self-confident. You’ll often find us yelling at each other over dressing room walls, or trading texts at midnight about that one pair of size 8 boots left on sale online at Nordstrom.com. But over time, we’ve found that dressing and feeling great has become much more challenging. And that’s even more frustrating now that every moment has turned into a photo opp.

We want to feel comfortable and appropriate with our style choices so that we can face the world each morning with confidence and ease. We’re in search of cool, effortless style that makes us feel amazing and powerful at this very age. Please join us at Grown and Flown as we venture forth into this new world together, and at Facebook and Instagram @thekoolestmoms.
