Grown and Flown Summer Style: 8 Dresses with Flower Power

By: Pam Harris

For those of you who follow us at G&F, you might think we object to color. And while there is strong evidence of that in our last few posts, it’s not quite the truth.

Summer style with flower patterns

Our entire adult lives, we have heard the “age rules” –  women past a certain age should stick with neutrals, colors are aging, patterns are too youthful, blah, blah, blah.  We are here to tell you to defy those rules! Color is our love, Color is sexy, Color is vibrant. We will wear what we want, when want, thank you very much!

First up – as comfortable as it is pretty, this Joie floral-paisley print in a vibrant summer palette. Just ordered this dress as I’m taking a big holiday in August. I’m thinking this will be my go-to for dinners.

This dress by Rebecca Taylor gently whispers Kate Middleton, sweet and self-confident – and who doesn’t love an off-the-shoulder for those summer BBQs. This cheerful midi dress features garden florals scattered across crisp cotton poplin. This might become a closet favorite.

MY LATEST VIDEOS

I love Tory Burch, everything she designs is for the woman who loves clothes and is not afraid to put herself out there. This cotton voile Meadow Folly Dress blooms in the season’s new floral. A perfect choice for getaways or simply sitting in the backyard sipping a glass of Rosé with your besties.  (Speaking of rosé – how do you like your Frosé?)

Did someone mention a garden party? This flower print from Alice and Olivia in lively watercolors makes this sweet chiffon dress a fresh pick for any occasion. And who doesn’t love a Kimono sleeve, the most flattering sleeve of all!

Ok, so this dress, is THE DRESS, Grown & Flowners bought so many of this Vince dress in white (yes, white). Why? Because it is the most flattering, comfy, stylish dress ever designed, and here it is in stripes. I think we have died and gone to dress heaven.  Yes, Pam and I already bought this!

How can I mention the Duchess of Cambridge and not mention my sister from another mother, the Duchess of Sussex, my minimalist pal? We are kindred spirits on so many levels, both Americans married to Brits and my in-laws act like they are Royal!  I feel like I know her and she would love this dress, it has what we call the “Markle Sparkle.” It’s a wrap, it’s sleek, and it has very fine stripes. I’ll take two please!

As a minimalist, I am most attracted to color blocking and this pleated Alice + Olivia is totally on point, a little hippie, a little modern with just the right amount of 70’s thrown in.

Can’t do a story on flowers and prints and not mention the queen of day dresses, Shoshanna.  This lady really knows her around a pattern, like this silk georgette ruffle trim Floral print.

We are going to need some fabulous earrings and these Kendra Scott striking drops are simply divine – crowned with faceted jewels and cascading with vibrant charms. They will be our favorite all summer long, even with a t-shirt half-tucked into jeans.

The motto of the story is this – if you love it buy it, and wear it as long as you feel good.  And never ever let anyone tell you what you can and cannot wear. You’ve earned it!

We are Pam and Mara, Grown and Flown’s new in-house fashion gurus. Based in Brooklyn, we’ve been friends for over 20 years, with four boys, many proms, graduations, beach vacations and birthday dinners between us.
Mara’s been living in jeans and t-shirts working in the fashion world in London, Milan, LA, and NYC, producing editorial and ad shoots for over two decades. Pam’s been suiting up for the corporate world as a chief marketing officer in the live entertainment/sports business.
We’ve always been a little obsessed with style and how we use clothes to help us feel attractive and self-confident. You’ll often find us yelling at each other over dressing room walls, or trading texts at midnight about that one pair of size 8 boots left on sale online at Nordstroms. But over time, we’ve found that dressing and feeling great has become much more challenging. And that’s even more frustrating now that every moment has turned into a photo opp.

We want to feel comfortable and appropriate with our style choices so that we can face the world each morning with confidence and ease. We’re in search of cool, effortless style that makes us feel amazing and powerful at this very age.

Please join us at Grown and Flown as we venture forth into this new world together.
