This Dad Collects Old Crayons To Remelt and Turns Them Into New Crayons For Children In Need

By: Brittanie

Crayons are one of those things that nearly everyone has at home even if it means they are all broken into pieces.

While the old saying is true, “Broken Crayons Still Color” unfortunately, that doesn’t stop thousands of crayons from ending up in the landfill each year.

Did you know that since crayons are made from paraffin wax, it can take years (even decades) for a crayon to decompose in a landfill? It’s true!

I don’t know about you, but that makes me feel bad for all crayons we waste especially when we go out to dinner and we just leave the crayons to be thrown away.

Well, one dad saw this an opportunity.

Bryan Ware created The Crayon Initiative after one night when his family went out for dinner.

While his boys sat coloring on the menu, Bryan couldn’t help but wonder where restaurant crayons end up, when all the people go home.

Turns out, they end up in the trash and that is when he had a brilliant idea – to collect old, broken and used crayons. He would then remelt them down and create new crayons for children in need.

He donates his crayons to children in hospitals to give them a creative outlet during their hospital stay.

Oh, and his crayon design is BRILLIANT.

Consulting an occupational therapist, he even gave his new crayons a unique design—large and three-sided, not round—so they’re easy for kids to grip and can’t roll off hospital trays! Isn’t that amazing?!

So, if you have any broken or old crayons that could be reused, you can donate them to The Crayon Initiative. You can also donate your time or money to help the program.

I think this is a wonderful idea and now I see crayons differently and cannot wait to send off to donate!
