Let’s make homemade DIY air freshener that smells amazing…and actually works!
We are trying to limit the chemicals in our home and it is time to make a batch of my favorite Air Freshener Recipe. This simple 4 ingredient homemade natural cleaning product uses essential oils and you can control what type of smell you want.
One-by-one we are throwing away the synthetic gunk! We are starting to use homemade cleaners, Shea Butter Lotion (*the best*) and other things like homemade hand sanitizer.
You get it, we are on a get-rid-of-chemicals kick!
But we still like a fresh smelling home, and let’s admit it. A houseful of bodies can get stinky for a myriad of reasons!

Easy Air Freshener Recipe
For an air freshener to work it needs to be a clean, crisp smell that doesn’t feel like a disinfectant or overly perfumed. The smell needs to be pleasant, but not overwhelming. The smell also needs to stay for more than a few minutes!
Oh, and it can’t just smell like it is ADDING to the smell. A good air freshener will replace and “clean up” the air around you.

Step 1
Pour your water and rubbing alcohol into your bottle.
Step 2
Add the baking soda and the essential oils.
Step 3
Mix the bottle well for a couple of minutes so the baking soda dissolves – don’t shake, swirl it.

You will need to “re-swirl” the bottle before each use.
Essential Oil Combinations for Chemical-Free Air Freshener Scents
We love Essential oils. They just smell really good and they don’t give you that scent “hangover” you might get smelling the chemical substitutes…think about it next time you walk down the detergent aisle at your local grocery store.
Favorite Essential Oil Combinations for Air Fresheners
- Lemon (15 drops) – by itself, lovely!
- Lavender (15 drops) – another one that is great solo!
- Purification (15 drops) – a delicious combination of grapefruit, tangerine and lime.
- Lemon (10 drops) & Peppermint (5 Drops) – a happy clean smell!
Substitutions for Essential Oils
If you don’t have essential oils on-hand we have also made this recipe with Vanilla Extract or Almond Extract.
Both smell great – albeit, they make me a touch hungry!
