Apple crostata is basically a fancier version of apple pie! It’s an open tart that can be made in (or out of) a pie pan.

It’s the perfect combination of fancy and comfort food that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

This Apple Crostata Recipe:

You probably already have everything that you need to make apple crostata!

Ingredients – Apple Crostata

Crust:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ¼  teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
  • 2 tablespoons ice water

Filling:

  • 4 cups (4 medium) apples, peeled, cored and sliced or chopped
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½  teaspoons apple pie spice **see notes

Serving

  • Caramel – homemade or store bought, optional
  • Vanilla Ice Cream, optional

Crust:

Start by combining the dry ingredients to make the crust.
Step 1

Preheat oven at 375 degrees F.

Make sure the butter is still cold when you cut it into the flour, so that the mixture crumbles.
Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar and salt.

Homemade pie crust is so easy to make and tastes amazing!
Step 3

Cut butter into flour mixture until well combined into large crumbles using a pastry blender, fork or food processor.

If the dough sticks, wet your hands a little.
Step 4

Add ice water a little at time until dough is moistened and comes together in a ball.

Step 5

Form into ball and flatten to round disk.

Add a touch of flour to your rolling pin so the dough doesn’t stick.

Roll dough on floured surface with rolling pin to about 12 inches round.

Filling:

Don’t slice the apples too early, or they will brown.
Step 1

In a large bowl, add sliced apples.

Step 2

Sprinkle with sugar and flour and toss to coat.

Mix the flour and spices with the apple slices to make the filling.
Step 3

Sprinkle with apple pie spice and toss to coat.

Pile your apple slices in the middle of the crust, and make sure you have plenty of room on the edges.
Step 4

Pile apples in the center of the crust.

Fold the edges of the crust over the apple slices.
Step 5

Fold edges of dough over apple mixture, crimping the edges slightly.

Step 6

Bake for 45-50 minutes.

Notes

Apple Pie Spice – you can substitute 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg and ¼  teaspoon allspice.

Swap out two ingredients to make gluten free apple crostata!

Gluten Free Apple Crostata Recipe

To make a gluten free apple crostata, first, replace the flour with gluten free all-purpose flour.

If you choose to use caramel sauce as a topping, double check to make sure it is gluten free (because many caramel sauces aren’t).

It’s also really easy to make your own gluten free caramel sauce!
