When our first born turned 8 on August 8, I wasn’t really aware of that birthday having any greater significance than the very happy fact that he was a year older. I was not yet familiar with the term “golden birthday” which refers to that one birthday – IN LIFE – where your age matches the number date you were born on.
Our youngest turned 17 on November 17th and this time we were ready. Not only had I learned about golden birthdays since our son’s not-so-golden 8th, but our daughter had been anticipating hers for years and there was no chance she would let us miss it. Fortunately, she turned 17 in a pre-covid era so we could celebrate her big day without restrictions.
If your child is little when they have their golden birthday, they may only have photo proof and stories you’ll tell them. But, if your kid was born on days 10-31, it’s worth it to take your birthday celebration up a notch since this event only happens once and they will definitely remember the day. Having a chance to shower a teen or young adult on their birthday, with even more reminders of how they’re loved, is ALWAYS a good idea.
How much to celebrate this fun birthday depends on your family’s traditions and, most importantly, the birthday boy or girls’ wishes. Here are ideas for golden birthday parties, decor, refreshments and gifts that can be modified for any budget.

What happens if you forget a golden birthday?
Golden birthdays are easy to forget but that doesn’t mean you can’t try to make up for that small oversight. Here are a few other ways to acknowledge a teen’s special day.
A double golden birthday is when you turn double the age of the day you were born. E.g., turning 20 on the 10th. Triple birthdays are also not unheard of.
Turning 50 is also regarded as a golden birthday so there is still another opportunity decades down the road.
