Green Peas Puree

By: Dr Hemapriya

Green peas puree is a rich source of vitamins, minerals and fibre. They make a naturally sweet and delicious first food for babies with their appealing green color. Green peas can be boiled or steamed until they are soft and tender. They are further pureed by adding little water. The puree can be further diluted with breast milk just before feeding it to the baby. This recipe is suitable for babies above 6 months.

Ingredients:

  • Shelled green peas, fresh or frozen – 1/2 cup (I have used fresh)

Method

  1. Place the green peas in a sauce pan with 1 cup water and boil it until they are very tender. Alternatively, you may steam the peas in a steamer. If using frozen peas, cook according to the package instructions.
  2. Reserve the left over water after cooking, it can be used to thinning out the peas to make puree.
  3. Place the cooked green peas in a grinder jar and pulse multiple times to make puree. Add the reserved water and adjust the consistency of the puree. Make sure the puree is fine.
  4. You may add breast milk to the puree while feeding to the baby. Do not add cow milk, salt, or any sweetener while serving the puree to a baby under 1 year.

Look for fresh green peas with no blemishes or dried skin. The pods should be green in color, firm and smooth to touch. Buy medium ones as they are sweeter than the large peas.
