Sew Your Own Christmas Stocking

By: Trixi Symonds

Down under here in Australia, where I’m writing this post, we still have the traditional Christmas stockings but they always seem a tad out of place when everything is heating up for summer and everyone is walking around in sandals.

In Europe the first Christmas stockings were just everyday socks probably the long thick woolen sort of socks that are perfect for winter.

I know that in America, where you still have your Christmas happily positioned in the middle of winter, hand-crafted stockings have become a family tradition in many homes.

And this is good news because Christmas stockings  must be one of the easiest shapes to cut out and sew and making them with your kids before Christmas is a great way to build on their brewing excitement.

Make Your Own Christmas Stocking

I have created a few designs to help inspire you. They all involve simple shapes and motifs and if you give your kids a free hand you’ll find that they come up with great ideas of their own. Also, if you don’t want to do lots of sewing you can glue the designs on.

Supplies You Need To Make DIY Kids Christmas Stockings

You don’t actually need too many supplies, and it is rather simple to make! That is a win-win for everyone.

Materials:

  • Felt
  • needle
  • embroidery floss
  • pins
  • glue
  • decorations (optional)

Making Your Own Christmas Stocking

  1. Print out the  stocking  template,  cut out and tape together. Pin onto your felt. Trace around and cut out two stocking shapes.
  2. Take one of the shapes and sew the toe and heel lines if you want them. This will be the front side of the stocking.
  3. Decorate the front side of your stocking. Sew or glue your design into place. Christmas coloring books are a great place to find ideas. You can also look  here  or here
  4. Place the front side of the stocking you have decorated face up on top of the felt your are using for the back side of the stocking. Pin the two sides together.
  5. Cut a 5″ x ¼” strip of felt to use as a loop from which the stocking can hang and pin the loop into place between the front and back sides of the stocking.
  6. Sew the two sides together. Your stocking is ready to be hung up for Santa to fill.
