Who can resist the combination of smooth milk chocolate and a refreshing mint filling? Homemade peppermint patties are the perfect holiday treat!

Homemade Peppermint Patties

Surprise your friends and loved ones with a box of homemade peppermint patties!

What is a Peppermint Patty?

A peppermint patty is a chocolate candy filled with a creamy mint center. The unique York peppermint patty was first released in 1940, and is now owned and produced by Hershey’s–a company that basically takes ALL my money because I have a strong sweet tooth!

Out of all the candies out there, I have always thought peppermint patties and junior mints were unique. No candy is half as refreshing, with a yummy chocolate and mint aftertaste!

Homemade Peppermint Patties

Peppermint patties are probably one of the easiest candies to make at home!

Are Peppermint Patties Vegan or Dairy-Free?

The peppermint patties you buy in the store are not vegan, or dairy-free. But, the good news is that there is almost always vegan and dairy free substitution that can be made when you make your own candy!

To make this homemade peppermint patty recipe vegan and dairy-free, substitute the butter can be substituted with vegan butter. The heavy cream can be replaced with almond milk, or coconut cream, which you can whip.

Replace regular dairy-laden chocolate chips with vegan and dairy free options, like Enjoy Life chips, which are free of the most common allergens.

Make sure the shortening you use is vegan and dairy free, like Spectrum Organics shortening.

Not all store bought peppermint patties are gluten free, so be safe and make your own at home!

Do Peppermint Patties Have Gluten?

If you buy gluten free chocolate chips (like Enjoy Life brand), this recipe can be gluten free! Still check the labels of the other ingredients to be sure they are all gluten free, too.

Did you know that if you refrigerate powdered sugar, it ruins it and makes it super crumbly and clumpy? Store at room temperature in an air0tight container for optimum quality.

Stir the chocolate between dipping patties in, to keep it from solidifying.

  • Stop just before chocolate is completely melted.
  • Stir until smooth.
  • Line another baking sheet with parchment paper.

Parchment paper is a must so that the peppermint patties don’t stick to the baking sheet as they cool.
