{Do it yourself gifts} Make a Craft Kit

By: Rachel

This DIY Christmas gifts post was written in 2012 and is no longer a sponsored post. It has been updated for 2020, but is still an awesome idea for the holiday season.

DIY Christmas gifts can help keep gift-giving costs down {and be a LOT of fun}.  We love homemade Christmas gifts that help kids develop new skills as they interact with the world around them.

Make a craft kit to give as gifts are great to spark kids’ imagination. Printable gift tags available below can be attached to any homemade Christmas gift!

Make Gift Kits for the kids this year. This tub includes items commonly found in kitchens to make a sparkling salt dough kit.

DIY Christmas Gifts

We have given and received gifts of  Goop Ingredients, Mask Making Kits,  Monster Playdough Supplies, Cookies in a Jar and many more! We thought it would be fun to make a craft kit with sparkly salt dough that can be baked into pretend cookies.

Today we are featuring the Country Crock tubs that we use to store (and gift) the activity kits at our house. We go through lots of spread over here and have LOTS of tubs.

They are so versatile!

How to clean the "image" off of tubs to re-use them

To remove the image from the side of your spread tubs you will need acetone (nail polish remover) and a rag.   The ink comes right off with just a rub!

Be sure to rinse your tub with very hot water after you remove the ink.

If you want to have removable labels stating the contents of your tub, use a dry erase marker.   For the meals we have stored in the freezer I write the contents on the lid, and wipe after you eat that meal – it is great on busy days to have something we can just pull-out and reheat.

Country Crock has a recipe book filled with fun kid-friendly meals ideas that you can make with their spread (and later store) in their tubs.

Once you finish cleaning off the logo from your tub, then you need to get everything together to create your salt dough ornament kit. This DIY Christmas gifts idea is perfect for kids!

Supplies You’ll Need For Your Salt Dough Ornament Kit

Materials Needed:
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1/2 cup of flour
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • Glitter – fine is best.
  1. Mix the ingredients together.
  2. If they are still dry, add more water by the teaspoonful.
  3. Let the dough sit at room temperature for about an hour so it becomes more smooth before beginning to work with the dough.
  4. At this point you can seal it into a plastic bag and add it to your craft kit with instructions as to how to play.
  5. Roll the dough out like you would cookies.  Remove carefully and bake at 250 degrees for 15 min. We have a convection oven, so the times might be a little different with a regular oven or dependent on the thickness of the end product.
