This DIY hot chocolate bomb recipe is totally amazeballs!

By: Janine Suvak

Hot chocolate bombs are blowing up the Internet so of course I had to see what it was all about. I didn’t know the difference between a hot chocolate bomb or a hot cocoa bomb, but when it sounds like explosions of chocolate you know you can count me in!

{By the way, hot chocolate and hot cocoa are like to-MAY-to vs. to-MAH-to.}

If you’re a DIY-er like me, then you know that half the fun is making them, and the other half is watching the surprised delight on the faces of family and friends as they watch the hot chocolate bomb magically burst into a delicious mug of hot chocolate – complete with marshmallows.

HOW TO MAKE HOT CHOCOLATE BOMBS

DIRECTIONS

Before jumping in, one important note: you don’t just melt the chocolate – you need to temper it for perfect shiny spheres every time! Chocolate isn’t hard to work with, but a little know-how is the difference between firm shiny hot chocolate bombs or a dull squishy mess.

If you’re not familiar with the term, take a few minutes to watch this fantastic reference for three easy ways to temper chocolate from the Sugar Geek Show – it’ll take your chocolate skills to the next level!

STEP 1: Melt the Chocolate

You can use a double boiler or the microwave to get perfectly tempered chocolate – the Sugar Geek Show video shows three different methods!

Her spatula is awesome, right?!? We’re Amazon affiliates, so of course I had to find one there. You don’t have to have one to make the chocolate bombs, but if you love kitchen gadgets like me you’ll want one anyway. Here’s where you can find the super nifty chocolate spatula + thermometer.

STEP 2: Mold and Shape the Chocolate

Spread the chocolate around the mold, all the way up to the edges.

Note: Before you get started here – make sure the size of the balls from the mold will fit into the cup or mug you intend to use!

Use a spoon to scoop the melted chocolate into the mold, the spread the chocolate to the edges using the back of the spoon. You want just enough chocolate that the color of the mold doesn’t show, but no more than that.

The thicker the chocolate, the longer it will take to melt! For entertainment purposes, I think it’s more fun if it melts and the marshmallows burst out while the hot milk is being poured onto it.

Once it has cooled and hardened, you can remove the chocolate half-shells from the mold.

You’ll want to move quickly for this part so you don’t get an oval shape instead of a ball:

Heat a pan with a flat surface to medium then turn off the heat. Pick up a half shell of chocolate with your fingers away from the edge so you can touch the edges to the pan and melt them exactly enough to get a completely flat surface all the way around, so two half-shells will come together for a perfect seal.

STEP 3: Fill With Hot Chocolate Mix and Marshmallows

{This is the best part – you can put any kind & combo of goodies that you like!}

Follow the instructions on your hot cocoa mix for how much powder to add, followed by marshmallows.

Don’t forget you have the volume inside the other half-shell too, so if you’re a marshmallow fan you can pile them up!

Whether you use mini marshmallows, dehydrated teeny tiny marshmallows, or one big regular marshmallow, it doesn’t matter as long as it fits. You can make them any way you like!

STEP 4: Seal the Halves Together

You can touch the edge of the top half to a hot pan for a slight melt and set it on the bottom half, carefully lining up the edges.

As an alternative, you can melt a little chocolate separately and use it like glue to bind the two halves together.

Gently smooth out the seam using the back of a warm spoon.

STEP 5: Decorate!

I like to melt white chocolate, put it in a squeeze bottle then swish a quick zig-zag across the top – use your imagination and do anything you like!

You don’t have to decorate it at all, either – any chocolate ball looks delicious, and the contrast of the dark brown chocolate giving way to bright white marshmallows is sure to delight.

Step 6: Serve

Depending on the hot chocolate you used, you can use milk or water. It needs to be pretty hot to melt the chocolate, so if the kids are gathered around to watch the marshmallows come out, make sure their faces aren’t within splashing distance while pouring.

If it hasn’t opened by the time the glass or mug is filled, just keep stirring and you should have the same fun burst of yumminess in moments!
