LEGO Is Switching From Plastic Bags To Paper Bags In Boxed Sets After Children Began Asking For The Change

By: Kaitlyn Sharrock

Everyone loves LEGOs. What we don’t love is the plastic packaging they come in.

The Danish toy company has decided to change that. Starting in 2021, they will begin swapping out the plastic bags their loose blocks come in for eco-friendly paper ones!

Kids have been writing the company and asking them to get rid of the plastic bags. Plastic is non-biodegradable. It will never disappear, just tear into pieces.

This makes it easier for wild life to swallow, get stuck in, or accidentally harm themselves.

LEGO has been looking for an environmentally safe alternative, both for their packaging and the toys themselves.

“We have been exploring alternatives for some time and the passion and ideas from children inspired us to begin to make the change,”

said Lego CEO Niels B. Christiansen, in a prepared statement.

Paper bags are biodegradable, made from a renewable resource, can be reused, and are less of a threat towards wildlife. They should also be easier for kids to open.

LEGO bricks are made of plastic. Although the company has had a hard time finding a complete alternative, about 2% of their pieces are made of sugar cane.

In 5 years, LEGO hopes to have completely swapped over to paper bags. Not only will this make eco-conscious shoppers happy, it’ll also be the company’s first step towards educating their customers. According to the LEGO website, one of their goals is to teach toy users about recycling.

By teaching kids early on about how to protect our environment, the chances of creating lifelong eco-friendly habits are increased. Is there a better way to learn about something so important than by having it taught by a staple childhood toy?
