Mark your calendars for September 1, 2020! That’s when Netflix is launching a brand new series, “Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices,” that is perfect for story time.
Hosted by the incredible 15-year-old Marley Dias, the activist and founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks, the show will feature Black artists and celebrities reading diverse kid books by Black authors about the Black experience. All 12 episodes launch in September, and I can’t wait to share them all with my kids.
More about Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices
Each live-action episode is only about five-minutes long, but those five minutes are packed with some fabulous stories and picture books geared toward younger kids.
For one, Lupita Nyong’o will read from her book Sulwe, which is about a young girl who wishes for lighter skin. Other celebrities and artists featured include Common, Tiffany Haddish, and more. And all of the books were chosen to not only tell a good story but to also start important conversations, as the Netflix trailer for “Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices” so beautifully and eloquently shows.
As Netflix shared in a statement:
Many of us have turned to books to navigate hard conversations around topics like race, representation, and self-love with our kids. And that was the inspiration for our new live-action preschool series, Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices, bringing children’s stories from prolific Black creators centering around themes of identity, respect, justice, and action to the screen.
All the books celebrate diversity and loving yourself. In addition to Sulwe, the other featured books include:
- “I Love My Hair” by Natasha Anastasia Tarpley
- “I Am Enough” by Empire‘s Grace Byers
- “Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut” by Derrick Barnes
- “ABC’s for Girls Like Me” by Melanie Goolsby
- “I Am Perfectly Designed” by Karamo Brown
- “Pretty Brown Face” by Andrea Davis Pinkney
- “Brown Boy Joy” by Thomishia Booker
- “Firebird” by Misty Copeland
- “Let’s Talk About Race” by Julius Lester
- “The Day You Begin” by Jacqueline Woodson
- “Anti-Racist Baby” by Kendrick Sampson
- “We March” by Shane W. Evans
In addition to launching on Netflix on September 1, the show will also be available on the Netflix Jr. YouTube channel.
