Health Kits are the New College Swag: What Some Schools are Doing

By: Grown and Flown

Freshmen have often been treated to college-logo water bottles and perhaps a t-shirt when they first step foot on campus, welcoming them as new members of the community. This year, schools are doing much more to try to protect the safety of all students, faculty and staff by distributing things like face masks, sanitizer and thermometers.

When we asked our Grown and Flown community if their student’s college plans to give out health kits, the resounding answer was yes! Here’s a sample of what parents are reporting about their teens’ schools.

Colleges are providing health kits for students

Tufts will provide a free disposable face mask every day and will have hand sanitizing stations around campus, will be tested, also for free, frequently for Covid, and will require daily temperature checks.

University of Virginia will provide a kit with two cloth face coverings, a 2 oz bottle of hand sanitizer and a touch tool. There will be 2,600 free-standing hand sanitizer stands in high traffic area around the UVA grounds.

University of Michigan will give out a “Starter Health Kit’ with two bandanas, two reusable cloth face masks and a bottle of 2.oz hand sanitizer.

Niagra University is giving students two, three-ply, 100% cotton mask that can be washed up to 15 times and a 4 oz. refillable bottle of hand sanitizer. There are 10 hand sanitizing stations around campus where students can refill their bottles. Students living in dorms will also receive an antimicrobial pillow. They are required to take their temperature daily but must provide their own thermometer.

University of Wisconsin Eau Claire is providing two masks and a thermometer, also requiring a daily temperature check which students must log in daily.

Arizona State University is giving face masks, a thermometer, small bottle of hand sanitizer. Like all colleges, they are communicating their fall plans on their websites, and explained some of the details of re-opening and the heath kits here:

Hobart and William Smith Colleges will provide five face masks and hand sanitizer.

Michigan State is providing a covid kit for all students who live both on and off campus.

Notre Dame will hand out three masks, a hand sanitizer and a thermometer. They also will send each student a Covid test kit to take before they return to the Notre Dame campus which they are allowed to do once they test negative.

Clemson is doing something similar with two masks and also requiring a negative test result as a condition of coming to campus.

WVU is providing each student faculty and staff member with a kit that includes a cloth face mask or gator, a touch tool for pressing buttons and opening doors, and hand sanitizer.

Bucknell will be giving two reusable masks, a small hand sanitizer and a thermometer.

Rollins will be giving masks, sanitizers and thermometers to each student AND staff member.

University of Miami includes a face mask, thermometer, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and a self-administered Covid-19 test.

Wagner College is providing masks and some cleaning supplies.

Some colleges have asked families to send their students with these back to school supplies

Some families have received a back-to-school list with items they must bring. Here is what Hampden-Sydney College is requesting:

digital thermometer

tissues

disinfectant wipes, cleaning supplies

acetaminophen and/or ibuprophen

cough medicine

hand soap and hand disinfectant that is at least 60-% alcohol

fluids for rehydration

box of disposable gloves

several cloth face coverings – cloth face coverings be washed daily after use) or several boxes of one-time use, 3 ply paper masks that can be used once each day.
