Parenting a child with ADHD is hard, and many parents are willing to try anything to help their kiddo. But I was surprised to see that the FDA Just Approved Video Games As a Treatment for ADHD.

The FDA said the game EndeavorRX can improve attention function, according to the Associated Press.

Children who play Endeavor ADHD video game are asked to play for 30 minutes, five days a week, for one month per treatment cycle.

Endeavor video game helps improve attention.

EndeavorRx requires a prescription and is designed for children ages 8 to 12 with certain symptoms of ADHD — primarily inattentive- or combined-type ADHD who have a demonstrated attention issue, according to their website.

The company says the treatment may not help with symptoms of hyperactivity, but instead, helps children to improve their attention.

The company suggests that children play the game for 30-minutes per day, five days per week over the course of a one month to see the full effects of the treatment. Another round can be prescribed after the first month is over.

Once the treatment has been downloaded and activated, no internet connection is required. Your child can play online or offline, but the system must be connected to WiFi to sync for updates and data.

Could playing video games be the next treatment for ADHD?

My son was diagnosed with ADHD Combined-Type when he was five, and it’s been a rollercoaster ride since his diagnosis. We’ve tried it all — therapy, medication, homeopathic treatments, established routines — it is a lot to juggle as a parent. Especially when your child is uncooperative regarding their treatment.

Combining my son’s love of video games into his ADHD treatment? I think researchers may be on to something here.

Are there any side effects from the ADHD video game treatment?

The company reports that 9 percent of participants in the clinical trials experience side effects, including frustration, headache, dizziness, emotional reaction, nausea, and aggression.

It’s the first time the FDA has cleared a digital therapy for improving ADHD symptoms, and the first time the agency has ever authorized marketing of a game-based therapy for any condition.

The company also makes the ADHD Insight app to help caregivers track, observe and monitor behaviors and symptoms associated with their child’s ADHD.
