Sesame Street Will Be Teaching Kids About Racism In A Town Hall Meeting This Saturday

Many parents are wondering: how do I talk to my kids about race and racism? Sesame Street, once again, is coming to help. They’re hosting a very special town hall meeting in partnership with CNN this Saturday, June 6, 2020.

What to expect from the CNN/Sesame Street Town Hall on racism

The second Sesame Street/CNN town hall was originally going to address Covid-19 again, as the first town hall event did. But after the killing of George Floyd and the subsequent protests, they decided to refocus the event. The new town hall aims to help parents talk to their kids about what can be a difficult topic: racism.

The 60-minute town hall is appropriately called, “Coming Together: Standing Up To Racism: A CNN/Sesame Street Town Hall for Kids and Families.”

Everyone’s favorite yellow bird, Big Bird, will moderate the town hall. He’ll be joined by CNN anchor Erica Hill and CNN commentator Van Jones. As with the first event, expect a lot of Sesame Street characters — like Rosita, Elmo, and Abby Cadabby — to make appearances. They’ll address topics related to racism and teaching tolerance in a way that kids will understand.

The main focus of the event will be racism, but it will also address the nationwide protests, how to be empathetic and understanding, as well as why it is so important to embrace diversity.

In the first town hall, Rosita taught kids everywhere how to “belly breath.” I’m hoping the newest CNN/Sesame Street town hall will have similar segments to help kids manage their anxiety with what they may be seeing on the news.

More than anything this town hall is an opportunity to open the conversation with our kids about race and racism. I’m thankful that CNN and Sesame Street have once again paired together to have this important conversation.

Then tune in to CNN this Saturday, June 6 at 10 a.m. Eastern and kids can hear their questions answered. The town hall will also be available to watch on CNN International, CNN en Espanol, CNN’s homepage, and CNN’s apps, even if you don’t have cable.
