How This Dad Really Goes the Distance for His Daughter

By: Melissa Milsten

One dad gives new meaning to the concept of going the distance for our kids. Julio Cesar Segura drove a total of 1,152 miles to celebrate his daughter, Diana’s 19th birthday. She is currently studying Aerospace Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

Dad and daughter always eat lunch on her birthday

The father-daughter duo have a tradition of eating lunch together every year on her special day, and Mr. Segura was not about to let a pandemic get in the way. Which is why on May 8, he left his house at 4:15 AM to drive across Texas, from El Paso to Austin so that he could surprise Diana.

He called her from the road to wish her a happy birthday and pretended to take her favorite lunch order that he promised to have delivered.

What Diana got when she opened the door of her apartment was so much better than lunch. Instead of a delivery from UberEats, she found her dad standing outside with balloons and a happy birthday sign.

Even though Julio and Diana only had thirty-minutes together for lunch all while standing six-feet apart, before dad had to drive 576 miles back home, it was time well spent.

Julio recalls, “I was driving the whole day, but I was so happy on the way back. She deserved a good birthday.”

As Diana tells Grown and Flown, “my father has always gone above and beyond in anything he has set his mind to do. I never thought he’d do this, but the fact that he did makes me feel incredibly loved, not that I wouldn’t have felt this way otherwise. He’s a passionate father and I love him for it.”

And, so do we! Happy belated birthday, Diana!
