You Can Get Rainsuit For Your Kids That Is Perfect for Playing Out In the Mud

The first time my kids played in the mud in our backyard, they got soaked and caked in mud. It was not pretty, and I was not a happy mama. But they loved it so much and playing outside in the muck kept them entertained for hours.

So I got a recommendation from a friend, whose kids also love the mud, for a full body rainsuit. I hopped on the idea, and I’m so glad I did.

Why we love our rainsuit

These full-body one-piece rainsuits cover the kids from head to toe. They’re waterproof. They’re durable even when the kids are climbing through the woods. And let’s be honest, my kiddos look adorable in them… even when they’re pretending to be mud monsters. 

We tested out two different brands, Tuffo Muddy Buddy and Vine, which are both made with nylon. Both rainsuits work super well at keeping both the water and mud out, even when your kids decide to sit in puddles, which mine love to do. They also both have hoods to protect their faces from the rain.

Sidenote, don’t make the mistake we did: make sure the bottom of the elasticized pant legs goes over the waterproof boot your kiddo is wearing (not tucked in). If it’s not, water and mud will sneak it’s way onto the clothes!

They rainsuits are also super easy to get on and off. The Muddy Buddy we picked had two zippers, and the Vine rainsuit has a zipper with buttons. I love the patterns available on the Vine suit (my daughter adored the pink princess print she picked out).

With Muddy Buddy, I love how the knees are reinforced, which makes it even more durable for getting down and dirty in mud puddles, or as my son calls them, mud ponds.

What’s the rainsuit sizing ?

Both rainsuits run a bit big, which is totally fine for me, because it allows me to layer clothes. They’ll often wear a coat underneath the rainsuit to keep them warm while they splash in the water and mud.

Are they easy to clean?

The most important question, am I right? And the answer is a resounding yes. After the kids done playing outside for a few hours, I’ll dump some water over them (they love this too, naturally) to get off any extra mud. Sometimes that’s enough. If not, they’ll slide them off and I’ll rinse them in the laundry room sink. Since they don’t acquire a smell despite the hours of playing outside, I wash them in the washer every few uses and then hang them to dry. Easy peasy… and oh so much easier than washing dirty play clothes constantly!
