How To Take Your Kids On A Backyard Camping Trip

If you’re looking for an easy change of scenery right now, why not try backyard camping?  It’s fun, it’s safe, it promotes social distancing, and you still have the benefits of indoor plumbing.  

Currently, many campgrounds are closed and summer camps are up in the air. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a little bit of the great outdoors in your own backyard! It also makes a great introduction to camping for families who aren’t campers to start.

How do you backyard camp?  And are you wondering just what to do when camping?

If you have a tent, clear an area of grass from pinecones, rocks, and other debris and set it up!  Make sure to check your weather forecast as well.  The best part about backyard camping is that it’s easy to change the day during bad weather.

If you don’t have a tent of your own, check out our diy tent that is sure to entertain your kids.  Using PVC pipe and blankets, you can build a temporary structure that can be saved for later use too. It may not be warm enough to sleep in overnight, but that doesn’t mean you can’t play in it until bedtime.

A fire pit makes it easy to enjoy some true outdoor camp cooking too.  We wondered if it would be as good as a true campfire and were pleasantly surprised how well it works.  Everything cooked the way we expected it to and it was a great way to eliminate all the brush from the trees in our yard.

We used the domed grate over our firepit to make ham, cheese, and potato foil packet meals and, of course, no camp is complete without s’mores.  It’s also a great way to test out those meals you’ll want to try on a regular camping trip.  We’ve added these campfire desserts list to our things to try out next, and this dutch oven peach cobbler looks like it is a must try.

With toddlers, you might try all of these indoor camping ideas. Sleeping in the backyard may not be the best plan with 2 and 3 year olds, but that doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy camping in a climate controlled environment.

Right now, even some scouting organizations are allowing backyard camping as an alternative for some of their rank requirements due to the unusual circumstances.  Check with your scouting organization for their requirements and rules to let your backyard campout count for your kids’ scouting adventures too.
