Of the many streaming services we subscribe to, Netflix has the absolute worst parental controls, at least for those of us with children between the ages of seven and twelve. Rather than allowing users to select which TV and film ratings should be allowed for each profile, Netflix forces us to choose preset settings for "Little Kids" or "Older Kids". Unfortunately, the Older Kids setting allows TV-PG and PG ratings, which we do not want our seven year old watching unsupervised. In fact, that rating literally means "parental guidance suggested". But the "little kids" setting excludes TV-Y7 shows, which include many of our daughter's favorites. There is no Netflix account setting that allows TV-Y7 while blocking PG. This is not a problem with the other streaming services we use, which allow us to set the allowed ratings directly. As a result, our daughter is forced to ask us to enter our PIN every single time she wants to watch a show that's rated TV-Y7, which is frequently, It's a hassle for all concerned, and much of the time she just takes the path of least resistance and watches more juvenile material, or uses a different service, like iTunes or Amazon Prime.
