University Of Tennessee Makes Things Right for Boy Bullied Over T-Shirt

By: Helene Wingens

This story has been all over social media, but allow me to recap.

A fourth-grader was bullied by his classmates for wearing a homemade University of Tennessee (UT) Volunteers t-shirt, that had his own version of the UT logo pinned to an orange shirt. He wore the ensemble for his school’s college colors day, and he wore it proudly.

He wanted to support the Volunteers, but he didn’t have a shirt of his own, hence the improvised version. Pride turned to devastation, when his classmates bullied him

After his teacher posted the story on Facebook, the boy’s story reached UT officials, who sent him a box of Tennessee gear. Then UT turned his homemade design into an official design, printing it onto an official t-shirt.

The demand for the homemade t-shirts crashed the University’s website, with all proceeds going to the charity, Stomp Out Bullying.

UT released the following statement:

In recognition of the fourth-grader’s Volunteer spirit, the university has extended an offer of honorary admission for him to join the Class of 2032. In addition, he has been awarded a four-year scholarship covering his tuition and fees beginning fall 2028 should he decide to attend UT and meet admission requirements.

Alumni, fans, and honorary Volunteers have stepped up in response to this story. So far, more than 50,000 shirts featuring the boy’s design have been pre-sold by the VolShop.

So, now this fourth-grader now has a full four-year scholarship to UT and the proceeds from the sale of his special design are being used to combat bullying.

We here at Grown and Flown say, that’s just about PERFECT.
