Few of us look beyond the beauty of the lotus, but the fact is that the seeds of the lotus flower are among the most nutritious things you can feed your family. Also called fox nuts or Makhana, they are used in ancient Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. Makhana seeds/fox nuts are filled with anti-oxidants, dietary fiber, protein, calcium, magnesium and potassium.
You can introduce Makhana to babies after 6 months, making sure to follow the 3 Day Rule. Today we have a Roasted phool makhana recipe that can be offered as finger food for babies over 8 months. Being rich in essential nutrients, this recipe also makes a perfect snack for older children too.
Ingredients:
- Phool Makhana – 1 cup
- Ghee -1 Tsp
- Turmeric powder – A Pinch
- Black Pepper powder – A Pinch

Method:
1. Cut the makhana into small pieces (to check for worms).
2. Heat a pan and drizzle some ghee in it.
3. Add the sliced makhana in the pan and saute for few minutes till it turns crisp.
4. Add the spice powders
5. Mix until the spices spread uniformly on the makhana.
6. Serve warm or store in airtight container.
Makhana is a gluten free food and it is ideal for babies with an intolerance to gluten. The high fiber content of Makhana makes it easily digestible and helps in smooth bowel movements.
