This Unicorn Slime Recipe is one of our favorite borax-free slime recipes. How to make unicorn slime became a mission because my kids are obsessed with slime and unicorns.

Making unicorn slime was a natural next step for my kids since it was combining their two favorite things in a colorful ball of happiness!
How to Make Unicorn Slime
A quality glue is the secret to making perfect unicorn slime. It brings out the pastel colors that make this slime so beautiful and fun to play with.
A kid-friendly slime recipe is super important to us. The last thing you want is kids playing with harsh chemicals.
This recipe is a win-win. Kids can get in on the mixing and help create this fun slime!
Unicorn Slime Recipe
Most everything you need for this slime recipe is stuff you already have around the house or is easily grabbed at your next trip to the store.
- 6 bottles of Elmer’s School Glue (4 oz each)
- 3 TBSP baking soda, divided
- 6 TBSP contact solution, divided
- Food coloring (blue, green, yellow, purple, pink, red)
- Wooden craft sticks (for stirring)
- Bowls for mixing
Directions to make Unicorn Slime
- Empty a bottle of Elmer’s School Glue to a small bowl.
- Add 1/2 TBSP baking soda and stir until combined.
- Add 1 drop of food coloring to the mixture and stir. You want a light, pastel color, so be sure not to add too much food coloring. We decided to make blue, green, yellow, purple, pink, and orange slime. For the orange, we added 1 drop of red food coloring and 2 drops of yellow, but all other colors required just one drop.
- Pour in 1 TBSP contact solution and stir. The mixture will start to clump together and pull from the sides. Remove it from the bowl and knead it with your hands until it is no longer sticky and is pliable.
- If the slime remains sticky, you can sprinkle some more contact solution to the outside of it.
- Repeat with all of the colors, until you have six separate colors of slime.
Arrange the colors of slime in a line, and your unicorn slime is ready for play!
Squish it, smoosh it, stretch it, push it, pull it…and so much more.

What Are the Ingredients to Unicorn Slime?
There are a lot of ways to make slime, but our slime includes the ingredients: Elmer’s School Glue, baking soda, contact solution, and food coloring.
How Do You Make Unicorn Slime Fluffy?
Follow the slime recipe carefully and you will love the way the slime feels. Slime texture is one of the most important things when it comes to play. You really want a slime consistency that you can’t help but touch.
What Colors Do You Need to Make Unicorn Slime?
Our unicorn slime recipe uses the following food color colors: blue, green, yellow, purple, pink, and red. You could go more traditional with the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Since you are probably using food coloring like we did, be aware that it is difficult to get really deep, saturated colors that don’t bleed onto your hands during play.
Is Elmer’s Glue Slime Safe?
Here is the information straight from Elmer’s website about Elmer’s Glue Slime Safety:
Elmer’s new slime recipes which are safe to make at home and include commonly used household ingredients such as baking soda and contact lens solution. Containing only trace amounts of boric acid, contact lens solution can be purchased over the counter and is regulated by the FDA. Baking soda is a common safe food ingredient.
Is Slime Safe for Toddlers?
Yes and no. We recommend using a recipe like this one that doesn’t have toxic ingredients like Borax, but that doesn’t mean it is edible or should be put in the toddler’s mouth. If you have a child that usually puts things in their mouth, then an edible play dough is a better.
How To Make Slime without Borax
Recipes like this slime recipe do not use Borax. There are many slime recipes that do, but alternatives like this unicorn slime project can give kids a way to make slime without touching Borax.

As you stretch the slime, the colors mix together to create such a fun effect!

Add a slime science experiment and record what the unicorn slime looks like after:
- 30 seconds of play
- 1 minute of play
- 5 minutes of play
- the next day

Remember how we mentioned that the glue is the key? Make sure you are using a glue that is washable, no-run glue that is easy to use and stays where you put it.
