Tips for Safe Play in the Summer Heat

Kids love playing outside, but during a heat wave it can be dangerous. Here are some tips for safe play in the heat:

  • Avoid playing outside when the sun is at its strongest. On really hot days, try to limit outside play between 10am-3pm. If you are outside during that time, take breaks, and step into air conditioning if you can. If you don’t have air conditioning at home, head to the library, mall, a movie, or the grocery store.
  • Enjoy a pool, sprinkler, or water play! If you do not have access to any, check your town for a public pool or splash pad.
  • Stay hydrated. Keep Pedialyte drinks and Pedialyte popsicles on hand in case they are needed. I also keep these awesome pouches of Pedialyte powder in my purse/ diaper bag. You just have to mix them into a bottle or cup of water!
  • Reapply sunscreen consistently, especially if you go into a pool or sprinkler.
  • Stay in the shade.
  • Wear light and loose clothing.
  • Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest points of the day.
  • If your little ones won’t drink fluids easily, feed them foods that have high water content, such as watermelon, celery, and strawberries, and oranges along with a drink.
  • Know the symptoms of dehydration and heat stroke. Talk to your pediatrician if you have any concerns.
