“Strawberries are what make life taste wonderful.”

The beginning of the year is a wonderful time for everyone, and even nature seems to celebrate by giving us little pieces of hearts – strawberries! Strawberries are becoming increasingly popular in India, with piles of boxes being available even at roadside fruit stalls. Now you don’t have to visit a gourmet food store in a big city just to get strawberries!

Strawberries aren’t really berries – in fact, they aren’t even fruit! They’re runners, a member of the rose family. Maybe that explains why strawberries are so pretty, with their bright color and cute shape. This is also exactly why they’re the perfect foods for fussy eaters! Slicing the strawberries will give you little hearts, which can be used to decorate any dish whatsoever. Blend strawberries into any mix for a beautiful, natural color that’ll instantly attract kids. Not to mention the lovely combination of sweetness and tartness!

But that’s not all, strawberries are also very nutritious, being among the top 20 fruits in antioxidant capacity. Here’s a quick look at some of the many nutritional benefits of this yummy fruit.

Please check the age recommendations before feeding your kids any of the recipes. You can adapt the recipes to your child’s liking, and skip ingredients like baking soda and baking powder. Opt for whole grains and jaggery and homemade butter wherever possible.

When buying strawberries, try to get organic ones as far as possible, to avoid the harmful effects of pesticides. Choose only fully ripe ones without any blemishes. Strawberries don’t sit well outside the fridge, but they can be frozen for months. Before using strawberries for a recipe, be sure to remove the leafy part, or the hull. You can either use a knife to cut it out or insert a straw from the other end and pop the hull out. Wash the strawberries well and you’re all set to make some delicious treats for your family!
