Baked Apples Turn Fruit into a Treat

Apples are just plain tasty. Most kids like them raw, cut up next to a dish of peanut butter or homemade sunflower butter for dipping. But you can really transform an ordinary apple with a little time in the oven and an easy oat topping. Poof, you’ve made an apple into something to remember!

These baked apples are great for little ones because the skin and flesh of the apple gets so tender and easy to chew. It’s also a great recipe to offer picky eaters. Here’s why: the ingredients are familiar, but some of the flavors and textures are new. So you can inspire your kids without overwhelming them.

How to Make Healthy Baked Apples

Making these cute baked apples is very simple, with only about 10 minutes of hands-on time. (You will have to endure around 40 minutes of wait-time while your apples bake, and your kitchen fills with magnificent smells. So plan accordingly for that.)

To start, mix all the ingredients except for the apples in a medium mixing bowl. It’s OK to use your hands! This mixture will be your streusel. It’ll be pretty crumbly when you’re done, and that’s fine.

Next, prep your apples. The best apples to use for baking are very crisp varieties, like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Cripps Pink. (Really the recipe works just fine with most apples, but I’d avoid Red Delicious, which can get a little mealy in the oven.)

Core the apples, slice them in half, and place them in a baking dish. Scoop a small amount of your prepared streusel into the middle of each apple, packing it down slightly.

Then bake! And breathe in that mouth-watering smell of warm apples and cinnamon spice.

A little extra drizzle of heavy cream makes these baked apples feel fancy and taste super rich. Getting your kids to gobble up fruit should always be this easy!
