Grown and Flown Style: Fall Forward

By: Pam Harris

We are happy to report that we are back on the style beat after summer vacays. We planned it so that our beach trips overlapped and our families could spend time together because that is what “besties” do! Our 4 boys (2 each) have known each other since they were little and it’s so fun to hang out with them as young adults, now with assorted boyfriends, girlfriends.

Mara on vacay!

Needless to say, Pam and I have been a little off the grid, out of touch or simply not paying attention to the outside world. But now we are back and suddenly we find ourselves in the thick of New York fashion week with some great party invites and we are not prepared. We need mani/pedis, we need a hair treatment (or 2), a facial wouldn’t hurt, and we need some foolproof clothes that are fall forward but will hold up in this current heat wave.

Note: G&F may receive compensation from purchases made through the links in this post but the opinions are our own.

I love this black washed-silk Equipment midi dress. I think it will look great all day with flats or mules, and then I’ll just swap in some heels for the evening.

MY LATEST VIDEOS

The midi length is THE chic length for this season – I like this re:named red dress midi, a great color and a very good price point.

We know that mustard is somewhat controversial, but try it – you’ll be surprised by how flattering this color can be. When I bought this easy breezy silk dress from Modern Citizen in mustard – Pam was shocked. Then, flash forward to our bestie vacay and she ate her words – and had to have it herself.  Ok, but for those of you who are scared, it also comes in navy blue. It’s super flattering, it’s midi – and it REALLY can go from daytime to night (honestly!).

The Dutchess of Sussex recently wore a denim Carolina Herrera dress – the world became obsessed and the dress sold out immediately. I saw these two denim dresses at Target – from A New Day for under $20 and this wrap from Universal Thread  – maybe not the exact copy, but still.

Everlane is now a full-blown fashion company, but they originally launched with just a few perfect items – like this leather tote. If we’re going to be running all over NYC next week, we are going to need a great carry all.

These mules from Vince are just enough of a heel for an uplift, but low enough to run around in all day. White shoes? I know! But we took a poll at Grown & Flown a few months ago and readers overwhelmingly voted for white AFTER LABOR DAY!  Fashion has no rules!!

SJP has really hit her stride this season with her newest shoe collection. As I’ve said before, I love glitter on my feet and these sparklers will look great with any of these dresses.

For the makeup equivalent of the foolproof outfit, we love these Olio e Osso balms. You can use them on your cheeks, lip, on your entire face – just blend a little and everything brightens up. It’s the no-make-up make-up – perfect for this sweaty time of year!

We are Pam and Mara, Grown and Flown’s  in-house style gurus. Based in Brooklyn, we’ve been friends for over 20 years, with four boys, many proms, graduations, beach vacations and birthday dinners between us. Mara’s been living in jeans and t-shirts working in the fashion world in London, Milan, LA, and NYC, producing editorial and ad shoots for over two decades. Pam’s been suiting up for the corporate world as a chief marketing officer in the live entertainment/sports business.

We’ve always been a little obsessed with style and how we use clothes to help us feel attractive and self-confident. You’ll often find us yelling at each other over dressing room walls, or trading texts at midnight about that one pair of size 8 boots left on sale online at Nordstrom.com. But over time, we’ve found that dressing and feeling great has become much more challenging. And that’s even more frustrating now that every moment has turned into a photo opp.

We want to feel comfortable and appropriate with our style choices so that we can face the world each morning with confidence and ease. We’re in search of cool, effortless style that makes us feel amazing and powerful at this very age. Please join us at Grown and Flown as we venture forth into this new world together, and at Facebook and Instagram @thekoolestmoms.
