Grown and Flown Summer Style: 4 Perfect Laid-back LA Looks

By: Pam Harris

Mara is headed to L.A. for the 4th of July weekend. #completelyjealous

Summer style from LA

L.A. always seems magical to me. While SoCal natives may complain about the traffic and the pollution, just saying “L.A.” conjures up images of perpetually sunny skies, the long line of palm trees along Rodeo Drive, a 60’s wood-sided station wagon with surf boards on top, fire pits at a glass cubed home overlooking the city, the breath-taking vista of the Getty Museum. And of course, the totally cool boutiques on Abbot-Kinney in Venice and my favorite store on earth, Fred Segal.

In my fantasy world – there’s a way to bring the laid-back L.A. leisure look into my life. I got a little help from my friend Mindy who hails from Pacific Palisades (another magical phrase, right?).

Ok – so it’s my Weekend in L.A. vision board – let’s say I’m in a convertible. I’m doing some shopping on Melrose and then heading up to a friend’s home in the Hollywood Hills (a girl can dream, right?) for cocktails. I’d be wearing this orange Sahara wide-leg jumpsuit and a y-chain necklace from Bauble Bar.

These super trendy cat-eye sunglasses will make that sunset look even sexier.

Now I’m headed to dinner in Venice Beach. Nothing fancy – have you been to Gjelina? Cool jeans are a great L.A. look. These starry J.Crew demi-boot crop jeans would fit right in, paired with this boho embroidered blouse.

Shoes? I love these Steve Madden slides in pink suede.

My fantasy continues – and up next is an awesome invite to the mansion in Malibu the next morning. This one-piece swimsuit from Miracle suit will make anyone and everyone look A-mazing. While this Mara Hoffman cover up might be too nice for a beach day in Coney Island, it fits in perfectly poolside in L.A.

And let’s throw everything into this beautiful woven tote.

Later that day, I’m meeting friends for coffee at Urth CafĂ© in Santa Monica. L.A. is known for their t-shirts and Monrow is one of the very classic brands. I’d go for something simple, like this Monrow Tank and these sporty cropped sweatpants with beige Nike sneakers.

I’d top it all off with a pair of these pink Aviator sunglasses – nothing says Cali like a great pair of aviators. And my small charm earrings will be a nice low-key accent.

You cannot be in L.A. without a hoodie– after all you never know when it’s going to cool down. I like this pink one with bell sleeves and distressed edges.

Can you tell that I begged my kids to go to college in California? (Neither took the bait – both ended up on the East coast). Sam, my youngest son, just read this post and suggested a soundtrack for my L.A. dream, which would include Anderson Paak and two of his albums, named Venice and Malibu. Anderson Paak is from Oxnard (just west of L.A.) and my dad was stationed near Oxnard in Port Hueneme when he was in the Navy and both my older sisters were born there, so it all circles back for me.

Mara – have a great week in L.A.!

XOXO  Pam and Mara

Mara’s been living in jeans and t-shirts working in the fashion world in London, Milan, LA, and NYC, producing editorial and ad shoots for over two decades. Pam’s been suiting up for the corporate world as a chief marketing officer in the live entertainment/sports business.
We’ve always been a little obsessed with style and how we use clothes to help us feel attractive and self-confident. You’ll often find us yelling at each other over dressing room walls, or trading texts at midnight about that one pair of size 8 boots left on sale online at Nordstrom.com. But over time, we’ve found that dressing and feeling great has become much more challenging. And that’s even more frustrating now that every moment has turned into a photo opp.

We want to feel comfortable and appropriate with our style choices so that we can face the world each morning with confidence and ease. We’re in search of cool, effortless style that makes us feel amazing and powerful at this very age. Please join us at Grown and Flown as we venture forth into this new world together.
